Dans la revue française RCM de septembre 2000, un entrefilet dans l ‘article relatant le Championnat du Monde Planeurs F3J attira mon attention : il parlait de la création récente à Corfou (Grèce) d’un hôtel spécialisé dans l ‘accueil des aéromodélistes. Après avoir consulté leur site Internet www.rchotel.gr (très bien fait d’ailleurs : tout y est indiqué) et un échange d’e-mails, je m’y suis rendu avec mon épouse en fin de basse saison, du 20 au 30 avril 2001.
L’endroit : située à hauteur du « talon » de l’Italie, Corfou est connue pour être un des îles grecques comportant des paysages somptueux et parmi les p lus variés. Très verte, accessible à bon compte par Charters au départ de Bruxelles, elle est un fief anglais de longue date. Assez montagneuse, l’île comporte de belles plages sur la côte ouest, mais qui ne sont accessibles qu’après une descente vertigineuse par de petites routes. Une voiture est indispensable pour s’y rendre. Un service de navette existe bien à l’hôtel mais si vous désirez visiter, je recommande de louer une voiture et de préférence en combinaison avec votre ticket d’avion (très bon marché : j’ai payé 7.000 BEF pour 12 jours). Le climat de Corfou est très agréable en mi-saison et très chaud en été : d’où l’horaire « décalé à l’espagnole « des repas et des activités.
L’hôtel : à 12 km de Corfou-ville et à 5 km de belles plages,: Magdalena House se compose de :
· 19 appartements avec kitchenette, frigo, télé-satellite,… pour 2 à 4 personnes et 10 chambres doubles, le tout moderne et très propre, mais l’équipement de la kitchenette est minimum.
· Une belle piscine avec bar, barbecue, ping-pong. Les pousse-café entre modélistes s’y prolongent tard.
· Un solarium, avec vue sur le site de vol, d’où nos épouses peuvent admirer nos exploits aériens.
· Une grande salle de banquet où les repas sont pris en groupe et où les mariages grecs traditionnels sont fréquents (nous avons assisté à trois banquets sur deux week-ends). Des cassettes vidéo d’événements aéromodélistes viennent agrémenter l’attente du repas.
Un accueil exceptionnellement chaleureux et courtois de la part du jeune gérant (et modéliste convaincu) Spiros Tsellas mais aussi du personnel grec, très amical mais exclusivement anglophone.
Le site de vol : dans le seul endroit plat de l’île, la vallée de la Ropa, Spiros a implanté à un jet de pierre de son hôtel un magnifique site de vol avec :
· Une piste en dur (125 m x 15 m),
· Une grande zone herbeuse pour les atterrissages « en dead stick »,
· Un atelier de construction et de rangement.
Il le partageait jusqu’à présent avec quelques modélistes grecs. Depuis l’an 2000, il a décidé d’y inviter les modélistes étrangers pour des séjours « à thème ».
Les avions : « Re-fuel and re-arm immediately » : telle était la devise des pilotes de la R.A.F. lors de la Bataille d’Angleterre, telle pourrait être la devise des aéromodélistes souhaitant passer des vacances « volantes ». Un éventail complet de modèles vous y attend : du « Super Sixty » 2 axes de début (sur lequel on passe le test de pilotage), en passant par des 3 axes intermédiaires de type « Ready », « Jupiter », … jusqu’au multi ultra vif, un hélicoptère et quelques planeurs électriques ou à treuiller. Les radios Futaba seront adaptées à votre mode de pilotage car les Anglais volent en « mono-stick ».
Les vols : Jed LAWSON, modéliste anglais très expérimenté (note : ce n’est plus Jed maintenant), gère le site de vol et s’occupe de tout : du parc d’avions, d’émetteurs, fait les pleins avec l’aide du jeune Adonny, démarre les moteurs pour éviter les accidents aux hôtes de l’hôtel, fait passer les tests au moyen d’un cordon d’écolage … ensuite, il vous laisse voler ou vous donne des cours. Si nécessaire, il répare les avions le soir. Incontestablement Jed sait y faire, et pour mettre de l’ambiance aussi. Il est sur la touche du matin au soir, sept jours sur sept, toujours disponible, toujours prêt à changer un moteur qui ne donne pas satisfaction (maintenant des OS LA et des Irvine). A l’expérience, Spiros a décidé de limiter le nombre de modélistes « volants » à 15 et c’est déjà beaucoup car Jed en est surchargé, surtout au début des séjours lorsque les « nouveaux » débarquent.
Les tarifs : Le tarif « Vols » est bien entendu séparé du tarif « Séjour » car certains pourraient souhaiter loger dans un autre hôtel : à la plage par exemple. Pour les modélistes qui ne viennent là que pour voler, le tarif « weekly rate » tout compris (vols à volonté + essence- est le plus avantageux : 90 GBP (5.850 BEF). Pour ceux qui, comme moi, désirent aussi visiter l’île de Corfou (et il serait bien malheureux de rater ses superbes paysages), un tarif journalier existe aussi : 20 GBP (1.300 BEF). Il permet par exemple de ne voler qu’un jour sur deux afin de « ménager la chèvre et le chou ». Comme les horaires de vol sont adaptés au climat chaud de l’île ‘de 9 h à 14 h et de 17 h à la tombée de la nuit), j’ai suggéré au patron d’essayer de trouver une formule intermédiaire du style « weekly rate half day » qui permettrait de visiter le matin et de voler l’après-midi après 17 h, ce qui me suffirait.
Pour pouvoir piloter l’esprit tranquille, un système d’assurance anti-casse a été mis au point. En fait, il s’agit plutôt d’une participation forfaitaire aux frais de réparation par votre faute : de 25 à 35 GBP selon le type de modèle que vous utilisez. Après une première casse, vous devez repayer cette prime.
Certains modélistes viennent en voiture via l’Italie (long voyage de 4 jours) avec leurs propres avions, le tarif d’utilisation des installations dans ce cas est différent.
Mes conclusions : j’ai beaucoup apprécié ces vacances. Pour l’environnement, pour l’ambiance, pour les vols, pour leur flexibilité. Evidemment, comme nous étions en basse saison, la fréquentation était minimum et les 4 modélistes présents ont été choyés comme des rois. La compréhension de l’anglais est indispensable.
