Cela fa it longtemps que, par les fin de journées calmes, (et celle ou il y a du vent aussi), nous nous amusons, avec quelques petits camarades aussi tapés que moi, à faire du vol en formation, la plus serrée possible. Et si par hasard, dans le passage bas et groupé au ras de la piste, un de nos « bac à voler » est sur le dos, cela n’étonne plus grand monde. C’est évidemment à celui qui s’enfilera toute la piste sur le dos, le plus bas et le plus lentement possible et bien des avions ont fini leur vie dans le dernier demi tonneau en bout de piste.
Sans compter qu’un arrêt moteur dans ces conditions ne vous laisse pas d’autre possibilité que de se « poser » sur le dos … il faudrait avoir des roues sur le dos … Mais voilà une bonne idée !
Je savais qu’un Américain (les champions dans cette matière) avait doté son Pits (grandeur nature) d’une paire de roue sur le plan supérieur et d’une roulette au sommet de la dérive et atterrissait et décollait la tête en bas, mais cela reste un train « auxilliaire » sur un avion « normal » .
L’idée d’un avion qui pourrait aussi bien (ou aussi mal) voler, décoller et atterrir d’un côté comme de l’autre faisait son chemin …
Construire un fuselage symétrique et mettre un train d’atterrissage des deux côtés, rien de plus simple, utiliser un profil forcément symétrique un peu épais et doté d’une bonne corde pour pouvoir voler lentement, jusque là, tout va bien. Mettre deux courtes dérives dotées d’une roulette en « haut » et en « bas », cela reste possible. Mais on commence alors à se poser des questions sur les angles de calage des ailes et du stabilo .
Dans un avion « normal », par rapport à une ligne de référence horizontale parallèle à la ligne de vol à une vitesse donnée, les ailes ont un angle positif de deux ou trois degrés, alors que le stabilo est monté dans le plan de cette ligne de référence. Cela correspond à l’assiette de l’avion à une certaine vitesse et permet aux ailes d’avoir l’angle d’attaque nécessaire pour assurer la sustentation et au stabilo de ne pas générer de trainée en étant porteur ou pire en ayant une portance négative.
Aux basses vitesses, pour assurer la sustentation, l’aile à besoin d’un angle d’attaque plus important, comme elle est solidaire de l’avion, il faut tout incliner en forcant l’arrière à descendre en rendant le stabilo « déporteur ». Vous devez tirer sur le manche !
Sur le dos, pour obtenir cet angle d’attaque, comme l’aile à déjà son angle « dans le mauvais sens », vous êtes obligés de pousser l’arrière très fort vers le bas, vous devez pousser fort sur le manche, l’avion vole avec une assiette très cabrée, le nez en l’air.
La construction est donc lancée et en une semaine le prototype est prêt. La construction est faite au plus simple, fuselage « caisse » aile au profil constant et bien sûr sans dièdre. Seule concession : une couleur franchement différente « au dessus » et « en dessous », Pour les calages, la seule solution était évidement de tout mettre à zéro.
Un dimanche trop venteux me permet simplement de rôder le moteur qui est neuf mais je n’ai pas envie de m’envoyer en l’air avec un avion que je ne connaît pas et dont les réactions risquent d’être « différentes » dans une aérologie perturbée
Le grand jour, comme prévu, le décollage est pénible car le dérive « vers le bas » ne laisse pas beaucoup d’angle positif pour prendre son envol. Mais la puissance du moteur et une bosse du terrain aident la chose à se mettre en l’air.
Comment cette chose se comporte-t-elle en vol ? Comme l’aile est calée « à plat » cela signifie que pour avoir ses deux a trois degrés d’attaque pour voler, le stabilo doit pousser un peu vers le bas, et, en effet, « trim au neutre », le volet de profondeur a un ou deux degrés vers le haut. L’avion vole « un peu » nez en l’air, dans les grandes vitesses, cela ne se voit pas, et en ralentissant cela se remarque un peu.
Sur le dos, ce qui dans notre cas ne veut rien dire, le comportement est exactement le même (symétrie oblige), il faut simplement pousser un peu (moins qu’avec un avion « normal »).
Pensez un peu au pilotage de cet engin : sur le « ventre » et quand il s’éloigne, tout va bien, quand il est sur le « dos » et qu’il s’éloigne, la profondeur et la direction sont inversées et les ailerons sont normaux . Quand il revient sur le « ventre », les ailerons et la direction sont inversés et la profondeur est normale. Pour ceux pour qui le vol radio-commandé sur le ventre et sur le dos est une évidence, tout cela va de soi, mais pensez un peu à la gymnastique mentale pour ne pas crasher, surtout près du sol !
