Le F16 EPP de Combat Air Models

Le Kit
J’ai découvert les PSS de chez CAM lors d’une sortie l’an passé au Cap Blanc-Nez. C’était deux F5 dont le vol avait impressionné tout le monde. Alors, quand l’occasion s’est présentée d’acheter le F-16 en EPP du même fabricant, j’ai sauté sur l’occasion. Le contenu de la boite était à la hauteur de mes espérances : nickel ! Les deux demi-ailes dans leurs contre-dépouilles, le fuselage brut à arrondir au papier de verre, l’empennage en Coroplast, le profilé en balsa pour les ailerons, les deux longerons en bois dur, l’accastillage et, last but not least, le scotch renforcé à la fibre de verre en 50mm de large. Rien à redire. Pour le montage de l’ensemble, une notice est fournie, mais j’avais également pêché sur la Toile l’article de Pierre Rondel (http://pierre.rondel.free.fr/f16.htm) qui décrivait l’assemblage et les premiers vols de son exemplaire. Ce document est très bien fait, mais concerne la première version du F16 CAM en Styro. Les principales différences concernent la largeur du fuselage qui ne fait plus que 5 cm au lieu de 6, les ailerons qui après découpage sont à présent remplacés par des profilés en balsa et les puits de servos qui sont maintenant à l’extrados. Je vous invite chaudement à vous référer à cet article. En ce qui me concerne, au déballage de l’engin, une chose me dérangeait quand même : l’encombrement. Avec son aile médiane, le F16 est en fait obligatoirement en une pièce. Et une croix de +/- 130x130, je vous garantis que ça prend de la place dans une voiture ! Le ‘blème, ça allait être quand il faudrait caser mon épouse, ma fille, le chien et les bagages pour deux semaines alors que j’avais acheté ce bout de mousse pour voler en vacances. Une seule solution s’offrait dès lors à moi : le rendre démontable.
La construction
J’ai donc fait un F16 en deux morceaux : ailes et fuselage. J’ai pour cela commencé par couper le « tail fin» de la dérive dans le prolongement du bord d’attaque de celle-ci. Conservez bien le petit morceau ! A ce stade, j’ai glissé une tige de carbone d’une vingtaine de centimètres dans une des alvéoles de la dérive pour la rigidifier et la faire s’ancrer bien profondément dans le fuselage. Un autre petit morceau est introduit dans le tail fin. Après mise en place de la dérive, on se rend compte que –miracle- si l’on trace une ligne imaginaire dans le prolongement de son bord d’attaque, on arrive pile au bord de fuite de l’aile. Il faut donc découper le fuselage au fil chaud selon cette ligne imaginaire. La partie dorsale pouvant s’écarter, on pourra glisser l’aile sans être gêné par les palonniers et guignols. Le verrouillage sera multiple afin d’éviter que les mauvais traitement que le bel oiseau ne manquera pas d’endurer ne déchirent l’EPP. Il y a donc d’abord une vis nylon de 10cm introduite perpendiculairement à la découpe. Celle-ci passe à travers des tubes en alu (un dans chaque partie du fuselage), le dernier étant enfiché sur un embout en plastique fileté servant normalement à assembler les meubles. Le petit bout de dérive découpé initialement revient se placer par-dessus la vis grâce à la petite tige de carbone mentionnée plus haut (vous suivez toujours ?). La seconde fixation (dont j’ai découvert la nécessité après quelques atterrissages pas toujours tendres) se situe à cinq centimètres du bord d’attaque. C’est à nouveau une longue vis nylon qui transperce verticalement le fuselage et l’aile pour se visser finalement dans la partie basse du fuselage selon le même principe que pour la partie arrière. Enfin, pour ménager tous ces ancrages et donner une meilleure assise à l’aile, j’ai disposé deux bandes de Velcro sur la partie du fuselage en contact avec l’intrados. Les connexions électriques pour les servos d’ailerons sont assuré par une fiche et prise informatique DB9 équipant normalement les ports série de nos bécanes. La fiche est encastrée dans l’aile et remplace la pointe extrême du bord d’attaque Je ne vous recommande pas de fixer l’autre partie au fuselage, laissez-la libre dans une cavité. En effet, elle pourrait se dégager et provoquer des faux contacts en cas de choc violent sur l’aile.
Vous voilà donc en possession d’un F16 démontable et (presque) indestructible !
Pour ma part, j’ai également apporté quelques autres améliorations… Encore une barre de carbone dans la dernière alvéole de la partie fixe du stabilo afin de la rigidifier. Une commande sous gaine Bowden pour le servo de profondeur placé à l’avant. Celle-ci s’incurve à l’arrière pour rentrer dans le fuselage et déboucher juste dans l’axe de la tuyère. Il suffit de creuser un peu pour que le guignol soit à peine visible et protégé. L’interrupteur avec prise de charge a trouvé place sur la prise d’air du réacteur, les 4 accus AA étant disposés par deux bout à bout, juste en avant de la prise d’air. Extra pour le centrage !
La décoration
C’est ici que l’on lit un peu de tout sur le Net… et pour cause ! Peindre l’EPP avant d’entoiler ? Excusez-moi, mais c’est moche vu le peu de transparence du scotch, et puis si la peinture n’accroche pas bien sur son support, le scotch ne colle plus sur rien. J’ai donc opté pour la peinture sur le scotch renforcé. J’avais fait un essai sur une contre dépouille scotchée à la peinture en bombe achetée dans une grande surface et ça tenait à merveille. Malheureusement le choix des couleurs ne convenait pas à ce que je cherchais. J’ai donc pistolé à l’acrylique…et ça n’a pas tenu bien longtemps :-(.
Moralité : Si l'on ne veut pas se retrouver avec des écailles de peinture partout dans la voiture, et que l’on préfère avoir un beau navion bien peint, il faut d’abord le peindre à la bombe de chez Traffic, et seulement ensuite lui appliquer l’acrylique dans les tons désirés. Moi, j’en suis quitte pour d’abord tout faire partie à l’éponge « Grat’grat‘»
Pour info, le schéma de décoration que j’ai choisi a réellement existé sur le deuxième prototype YF16 en 1974 (Serial AF01568).
Le vol
Conscient de n’être pas un moustachu, je me garderai bien de vous produire une analyse fine des quelques petits vols que j’ai faits. Sachez quand même que les vols inauguraux ont eu lieu sur le versant sud du col du Glandon (Savoie). Comme je ne connaissais pas précisément le site de vol pour cette orientation du vent (le vent de nord-ouest y est préférable, on vole alors pile poil sur le col), j’ai dû quelque peu tâtonner et les petites conditions permettaient à peine à une aile style Zagy de monter. Et bien, le F16, du haut de ses 950gr s’autorisait tout de même à voleter sagement sans perdre d’altitude. J’ai été vraiment séduit par la beauté en vol de ce rapace à la silhouette caractéristique et par sa douceur. Il n’a vraiment rien de vicieux : une vitesse jamais exagérément rapide, un décrochage assez tardif. Bref, ce qu’il faut pour prendre du plaisir sans se prendre la tête.
